Background

In rural Cambodia, many children face barriers to accessing education due to poverty, distance, and inadequate facilities. Overcrowded or dilapidated school buildings often prevent students from continuing their studies beyond primary level. Recognising these challenges, Japanese donors partnered with Dana Asia to design and deliver school infrastructure projects, ensuring that poor and marginalised children have the opportunity to complete their education in safe and supportive environments.

The challenge

Despite strong demand for education, rural communities in Cambodia often lack adequate facilities. Many schools were unable to accommodate all students, forcing children to study in shifts, walk long distances, or leave school early. In some cases, schools only offered middle school education, cutting short students’ chances to progress to higher levels and secure better employment opportunities.

Our approach

Dana Asia provided advisory services to connect donors with local Cambodian partners and manage school construction projects. Each project was developed in close collaboration with local communities to ensure sustainability and long-term use. Key elements included:

  • Construction of new school buildings in rural communities
  • Provision of safe, child-friendly classrooms and learning spaces
  • Provision of educational materials and support for teachers
  • Partnership with local education authorities to staff and maintain the schools

Lessons learnt

Investing in school infrastructure creates a direct and measurable impact on access to education, particularly in rural areas where barriers are greatest. Partnering closely with local authorities and communities ensures that new facilities are well used and maintained. Beyond bricks and mortar, school buildings serve as symbols of opportunity, demonstrating the transformative power of education when international donors and local partners work together.

“School buildings are more than just infrastructure – they are a tangible symbol of education for all and the embodiment of a community’s belief that every child deserves to learn.”
