Green microfinance: Meet Analen Alopoop

March, 2024

Analen Alopoop is a sari-sari store owner in Rizal who wanted to reduce the environmental impact of her business while maintaining a reliable source of income. Her store initially sold basic goods in single-use plastic sachets, common in micro convenience stores across the Philippines, which collectively contribute a staggering 36% of global ocean plastic waste.

In 2023, Analen became the first pilot eco sari-sari store owner through Grameen Pilipinas Microfinance Inc. (GPMI), with support and advisory from Dana Asia. She received a ₱10,000 (AU$277) loan to purchase refillable containers and bulk products, allowing customers to buy goods without plastic packaging. Training from Dana Asia equipped her to operate the store efficiently and sustainably.

Within months, Analen expanded her offerings to include fast-moving refill items such as liquid detergent, dishwashing liquid, and fabric conditioner. Her store not only provides affordable goods but also raises awareness about reducing plastic use in her community.

Analen’s success is inspiring the next wave of eco sari-sari stores, with additional pilot loans scheduled for 2024. Her entrepreneurial spirit, resilience, and commitment to sustainability demonstrate how microfinance can enable meaningful environmental and social impact, showing that even small businesses can lead the way toward a greener future.

“I wanted my store to do more than make money – I wanted it to help my community and the planet. Every refill sold is a small step toward a cleaner future.”
