Outgrower: Meet Preap Rin
November, 2020Preap Rin, 55, from rural Cambodia, struggled to support her nine-member household on a meagre US$120 per month, with limited education and few local employment opportunities. Caring for children and grandchildren while relying on low-paying, hazardous work left her with no stable income or pathway to financial security. In November 2020 she decided to join Dana Asia’s Outgrower program with a US$2,900 loan which was used to establish a small-scale poultry enterprise, receiving technical training, inputs, and a guaranteed market. Raising chickens in 90-day cycles, Preap Rin increased her household income by 98%, achieved an 85% survival rate, and is now able to save for healthcare, emergencies, and family events. She has expanded her shed from 500 to 1,000 chicks and aims to pass management to her daughter, securing intergenerational income and a sustainable family livelihood.

“I am 55 years old now and if I keep going well to take care of this project, I hope in 5–10 years to transfer responsibility of the shed to my daughter to help take care of her family in the future.”
